Oxford Position Paper: From Autonomous Agents to Cognitive Symbionts
Oxford · hf · 2026-11-06
A position paper by Hao Fei (University of Oxford) argues Physical AI has a second, equally important half beyond embodied robots: AI-augmented human intelligence (AHI). It proposes the cognitive symbiont—a lifelong, embedded, real-time, low-friction, proactive companion system that senses what the person senses, retains context and knowledge across years, models their situation and mind, and assists at the right moment. The paper frames the core concept as the cognitive gap between what a person could bring to a situation and what fits in working memory, organizes the design space as a symbiosis loop of sensing, keeping, understanding, and acting, and calls for embedded governance.
