GitHub's new Git storage handles 7,200 pushes/sec from 5,000 concurrent agents

GitHub unveiled its next-generation Git storage architecture at GitHub Universe: internal tests show a single repo sustaining 5,000 concurrent agents sending 7,200 pushes per second while serving reads with consistently low latency — all rebuilt while GitHub kept running.
- Built on two principles: minimize coordination, decouple storage from compute. Previously, 99.99999% of repos moved to Azure, write quorums scoped to individual references, virtual replicas backed by Azure Blob Storage.
- Key insight: Git objects are immutable and content-addressed, so writers need no coordination to store them; only tiny reference updates require agreement.
- The Ref-CAS replicated log makes reads nearly free when nothing has changed.
