Why LinkedIn added semantic matching: keyword-only search missed relevant posts
_jaydeepkarale · x · 2026-11-06
LinkedIn's search team found two failure modes: returning nothing when no post contained all query keywords, or returning keyword-matching posts that didn't actually answer the question due to lack of conceptual understanding. Analysis showed correct-answer posts often existed in the index without matching every keyword—motivating the addition of semantic matching (embedding-based retrieval and ranking) to the content search engine.
