Google's Nature paper: smartwatch AI detects hypertension without cuff calibration
AI_Andrew · x · 2026-11-06
Google Research published in Nature a multimodal AI system, AI-PPG-ACC-HTN, that passively detects signs of hypertension using standard consumer smartwatch sensors (PPG + accelerometer) with no cuff calibration, validated against 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring with accuracy comparable to cuff-based workflows. Hypertension affects 1B+ people, over half unaware, with missed diagnoses especially severe in adults 18-44. The pipeline uses multimodal self-supervised waveform encoders, person-level aggregation, and a supervised classifier.
