AI smartwatch detects hypertension with 66% sensitivity, 90% specificity, Nature study finds
EricTopol · x · 2026-11-06
A prospective Nature study of 196 healthy participants aged 40 shows AI applied to consumer smartwatch multimodal waveforms (PPG and accelerometry) can opportunistically detect signs of hypertension, achieving 66% sensitivity and 90% specificity — comparable to a single clinic visit. With over half of hypertensive adults unaware of their condition, opportunistic screening could aid early intervention. Authors caution larger studies, older age groups, and higher sensitivity are still needed.
