Harvard mathematician Dan Freed on what QFT really is — and AI's impact on math
TOEwithCurt · x · 2026-11-05
Harvard mathematician Dan Freed (Shiing-Shen Chern Professor, director of Harvard's Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications, PhD under Isadore Singer) explains what quantum field theory really is on Curt Jaimungal's podcast: QFT is like the proverbial elephant — "you never see the whole elephant" — and quantum theory is projective. The episode also covers what AI is doing to mathematics. Freed co-derived a general formula with Michael Hopkins for classifying certain topological phases of matter.
