Big Tech's $720B AI buildout won't stop until someone forces it, The Verge argues
The Verge AI · rss · 2026-11-05
After the quarterly earnings calls of Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta, The Verge draws three conclusions:
- Record spending continues: the four giants plan at least $720B in CapEx this year alone, mostly for AI infrastructure, on top of $1T+ in committed spending
- Returns still elusive: the AI data center buildout is no closer to delivering its promised returns
- No one slows down voluntarily: competitive dynamics mean Big Tech won't curb the buildout on its own — only external forces can stop it
