Claude Code engineer Addy Osmani warns AI fluency is eroding critical thinking
APPSO · wechat · 2026-11-04
Claude Code engineer Addy Osmani published a long essay on how polished, confident AI output trains developers to stop verifying: the slide from cognitive offloading to dependency to what Wharton calls "cognitive surrender." His label for the gap between AI drafts and work you dare sign off on: the "orchestration tax." He also cites Anthropic's internal "supervision paradox" — reviewing Claude's mistakes depends on skills that over-reliance is eroding.
His countermeasures: form a hypothesis before prompting; rewrite the requirements after two failed prompt rounds; don't celebrate green tests — check raw commands and outputs and ask "what did I miss?"; have the AI quiz you; and hand-write one core piece of work each week to recalibrate your own abilities.
