YC Startup School: 10 mindset shifts to go from researcher to founder
Y Combinator · youtube · 2026-11-04
Y Combinator released a new Startup School episode with Francois Chaubard — YC visiting partner, alum of Fei-Fei Li's lab, and founder/CEO of Focal — on the ten mindset shifts needed to go from researcher to formidable founder.
Core thesis: Google, Anthropic, and Databricks were all founded by PhDs, but they're the exceptions — most academic founders fail because the instincts that get you published can get you killed in a startup. The ten shifts include:
- Vanity metrics vs. what people actually want;
- Interesting vs. important ideas;
- Novelty vs. plagiarism judged differently;
- No finish line (no deadlines or grades);
- Get on a plane and talk to people;
- Hyperbole is okay; the 70% rule;
- You can't delegate the hard stuff;
- Become a capitalist;
- Nobody cares how smart you are; get out of your office.
