Designer Tom Johnson published a transparent write-up of how he built Tomjohnville, his AI-built portfolio site: 60 days, 2,637 prompts, 12.5B tokens, and 383 PRs.
- Evolution: started from a Framer single-pager, then experimented with concentric rings, a 3D page, a globe (9 prompts/9M tokens), pixel trucks and a camper (102 prompts/185M tokens), realistic character modeling (63 prompts/502M tokens — abandoned), and a scene per project (59 prompts/333M tokens)
- Key pivot: after failing to make his character look realistic with downloaded rigs, he reverted to the simple style, which let him populate the world with more characters
He stresses this is literally how it was made — typos and all — exposing the raw vibe-coding process, including dead ends, as part of the portfolio itself.
