CircleCI on parallel coding agents: not everything should run in parallel
rseroter · x · 2026-11-04
CircleCI published a 16-minute guide on running multiple coding agents in parallel without piling up PRs. Key thesis: not everything should be parallelized.
- Good candidates: independent bug fixes in different code areas, new tests for stable code, doc updates, isolated components built against existing interfaces.
- Poor candidates: tasks touching the same files or shared interfaces—broad refactors, cross-module renames, shared type changes—since agents can't see each other's changes and easily conflict.
- Requirements: each parallel task needs a definition of done, isolation, and smart task boundaries.
- Coordination relies on rebase + CI cycles and merging in dependency order so testing and review don't become the bottleneck.
The goal is more finished work from parallel agents, not just more code.
