Anthropic engineer warns of 'cognitive surrender': AI coding erodes skills needed to supervise it
gdechichi · x · 2026-11-04
Addy Osmani, an engineer on Anthropic's Claude Code team, describes what he calls "cognitive surrender": the more code you hand to agents, the more you lose the skills needed to supervise them.
AI-generated code looks pristine and tests pass, so engineers start approving work they no longer understand. Anthropic's own research warns that supervising Claude requires exactly the coding skills that may atrophy from AI overuse.
His key observation: "When you're producing more than you can stand behind, you're no longer reviewing. You're hoping."
