OpenAI's Georgia data center will cut up to 1,000 MW when the grid is strained

OpenAI announced a "Grid Protectors Program" with Georgia Power: its Georgia data center will drop up to 1,000 MW of demand—roughly what 700,000 households use—when the grid is strained, and OpenAI says it will pay full infrastructure and electric-service costs for the site.
Coverage is split: The Verge frames it as data center power plants protecting nearby areas, while TechRadar says OpenAI is rebranding data centers as "compute campuses" to win people over.
