App launches up 80% but downloads up just 2%: building is easy, customers are hard

At Solo Founder Day, Yucheng shared two sets of numbers on solo founders.
Set one: 235K new apps hit the App Store in Q1, up 80% YoY, while downloads grew only 2%; Product Hunt saw 55% more new products in Q2 but average votes per product fell by a third to a quarter.
Set two: US startup survival rates have stayed flat for 30 years; Stripe data shows one-person businesses hitting $1M annual revenue tripled from 2023 to 2025, and the share of companies getting first payment within 30 days rose from 8% to 20%.
The takeaway: the odds of success haven't changed — what's hard has shifted from building to finding your first customers. Even the speaker admits burning tokens on Claude Code daily hasn't eased his anxiety.
