NVIDIA's AgentBaton cuts agent API costs 65.9% via well-timed handoffs to smaller models
rupspace · x · 2026-11-03
NVIDIA Research introduces AgentBaton, a method for efficient model collaboration in AI agents: a capable model starts the task, then hands off to a smaller, cheaper model at well-timed moments — no fine-tuning of either side. The successor model inherits the workspace via context or log files, and one detector works across different model pairs.
Across 11 model pairs, AgentBaton cuts API costs by an average of 65.9% while maintaining or improving accuracy, extending the accuracy-cost frontier. The work tackles who starts, when to switch, and how to pass context.
