Finite Simple Groups Classification Fully Formalized in Lean, Exposing 96 Errors in 47 Peer-Reviewed Papers
ChrSzegedy · x · 2026-11-03
- The CFSG project has completed a full Lean formalization of the first-generation proof of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups: 43.1M lines of Lean, 2.05M declarations, 715 papers/books, and 100 milestones — a proof spanning thousands of pages by 100 mathematicians over decades.
- Along the way, formalization uncovered 96 errors/gaps in 47 peer-reviewed papers published in top math journals including the Annals of Mathematics, underscoring why formalization matters in the era of "vibeproving."
- The project also produced new mathematics: a paper on the Unbalanced Group Theorem explains counterexamples to a closure assertion in a published argument and offers an alternative route built on Solomon's 1976 theory of maximal 2-components.
