Ex-professional translator open-sources Subtitle Foundry, a modular AI subtitle workbench
mrtdlgc · reddit · 2026-11-03
A former professional translator/subtitler open-sourced Subtitle Foundry (AGPL-3.0), a subtitle workbench built around replaceable SOTA speech/language stages, non-commercial and long-term maintained.
Design decisions useful for LLM pipelines:
- ASR, timing and translation stay separately inspectable: default route uses ElevenLabs Scribe v2 word timestamps; alternatives include energy/Silero speech-activity alignment; existing subtitle tracks can bypass ASR.
- Context-aware translation with source timing evidence kept: exact-timing and editorial modes; plausible corrections of ASR errors can themselves be wrong, so raw transcripts/timing stay reviewable.
- Resumable paid stages without silent double-charging: intermediate artifacts, raw responses and request identity kept; uncertain paid submissions require reconciliation instead of auto-retry.
- Auth/billing explicit: prefers subscription connections (Codex, Claude Code, Grok Build); API adapters for OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, xAI, OpenRouter; no silent fallback to billed APIs.
- Finish in a review tool: video playback, waveform, subtitle editing, persisted corrections, SRT/ASS export.
Tested on full Turkish→English and Ukrainian→English films (mostly ElevenLabs + Codex); no published benchmarks yet.
