Scale AI's READY framework: identical-accuracy agents need 39.2% vs 29.6% human review

Scale AI introduces READY (Reliable Enterprise Agent Deployment), an eval framework built on the idea that what determines deployment isn't raw accuracy but how well an agent knows when to say "check this one."
Method: agents complete task batches with confidence self-ratings, hand uncertain items to human reviewers, and Scale measures how much human review is needed to hit a reliability target.
Key findings (16 agent systems, 750 cases, clinical-audit case study):
- Two agents with near-identical autonomous accuracy (72.8% vs 72.5%) needed 39.2% vs 29.6% human review to reach the same 76% reliability target — a quarter less human time, because the better one knew which answers were shaky.
- Across all 16 systems, calibration skill was almost uncorrelated with accuracy.
- There's a human ceiling: assuming 90% reviewer accuracy, no agent+human team beats 90%; at 85% reliability targets, every agent effectively hands everything to a human.
Takeaway: the agent that ships isn't the top scorer — it's the one that knows when to ask for review, and almost nobody measures that yet.
