The UBI paradox: when AI automates all jobs, who gets the scarce beachfront property?
miquiztli8 · reddit · 2026-11-03
A Reddit long-post examines a rarely-discussed flaw in the post-work UBI scenario where AI automates 90-99% of jobs. Even if goods and services become abundant and cheap, scarce assets — beachfront property, desirable real estate, rare cars, fine art — have fixed supply, so universal disposable income would explode their prices. Meanwhile, today's paths to upward mobility (hard work, education, entrepreneurship) vanish: if everyone gets the same $5,000 monthly check and there's no labor market, there's no way to afford a better lifestyle. Those who owned property, businesses, and AI infrastructure before the transition would hoard and bequeath wealth, creating a permanent economic caste determined by pre-AI ownership. The author accepts that UBI could secure comfortable basics but argues basics ≠ the freedom to pursue the life you want — UBI alone doesn't solve it.
