World Bank: Sub-Saharan growth hits 4.3%, AI readiness is the key lever
ChinasaTOkolo · x · 2026-11-02
The World Bank released its October 2026 Africa Economic Update, themed Building AI Readiness.
- Sub-Saharan growth is gaining momentum: regional GDP growth is projected to rise from 4.1% in 2025 to 4.3% in 2026, with upgrades for nearly three-quarters of countries—yet still insufficient to substantially cut poverty or create enough jobs for the fast-growing labor force.
- The report argues AI can boost productivity, expand economic opportunity, and improve service delivery. Africa's biggest near-term opportunity lies in adopting and adapting practical AI solutions while strengthening foundations: reliable electricity, connectivity, skills, data, compute infrastructure, and strong institutions and governance.
- Chinasa T. Okolo will join a World Bank webinar on Nov 3, 2026 to unpack the report and discuss turning AI adoption into jobs and growth.
