Anthropic buys one-person drug startup that reached mouse trials in 18 months with Claude

Anthropic disclosed it acquired Mithril Medicine in July — a pharma company whose only full-time employee is founder Cody Tranbarger. Working with 11 external labs and Claude as coordinator, he pushed two rare muscular dystrophy programs (LAMA2-CMD, alpha-dystroglycanopathy) to initial mouse trials in under 18 months, with some mice showing improved grip strength.

Model: humans judge, Claude plans and coordinates, external labs execute — a "Pipeline-in-a-Person." Claude digested 113 antibodies across 341 pages of production reports in under 8 minutes and revised experiment plans in 4; idea-to-research-design shrank from 1-2 months to 2-3 days. But errors propagate fast too: at least 3 of 6 Claude errors reached emails sent to labs.

Context: follows Anthropic's acquisitions of Coefficient Bio ($400M) and Bun; VC-backed AI acquisitions hit 195 deals in the first nine months of 2026, 14% above all of 2025. Candidate drugs are targeted for 2027, human trials potentially by late 2028.
