Karpathy builds HackerTube with Claude Code: 6,454 videos mined from 43M HN comments
nptacek · x · 2026-11-02
Andrej Karpathy shared his weekend hack HackerTube: annoyed with YouTube's recommendations, he used Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to filter 43M comments across 20 years of Hacker News down to 6,454 videos that keep getting recommended — all in about 2 hours.
Highlights:
- Excellent recommendations with no logins; state lives in the local browser session
- Thumbnails are representative frames from mid-video instead of hyper-optimized uploads
- The underlying comment-analysis dataset is released as a zip so anyone can point Claude at it and build their own version
The project was widely praised, with Taylor Lorenz calling it "so cool."
