Two UIST 2026 papers demo electrical touch: RingIO input ring and a cold-sensation illusion
plopesresearch · x · 2026-11-02
The Plopes lab published two UIST 2026 papers on electrical touch, demoed live in one video:
- RingIO: a ring with double-sided electrodes that senses touch on the outside and delivers tactile feedback on the skin inside — eyes-free input with felt response. First author Lonnie Chien, who just started his PhD at Cornell.
- Thermal illusion: electrical touch redirects the perceived location of cold (or hot) away from the physical source; compared to vibration it improves cold referral with less distracting buzz. With Wen Li, Rong Ni & Bozhi Tian.
Both explore electrical stimulation as a medium for haptic interaction.
