Dev adds chatting AI bots to multiplayer games, doubling as server load tests
chongdashu · x · 2026-11-01
Indie developer chongdashu shares a lesson from building multiplayer games: when player counts are low, the world feels empty, so he added simple AI bots to keep players company — and the bots even chat with each other.
A key implementation detail: the bots connect in from a separately running server, so their logic doesn't overload the main game server. He notes this setup also doubles as a convenient way to load-test the game.
