antirez on agent coding: extend existing tests first rather than build a huge suite upfront
antirez · x · 2026-11-01
Redis creator antirez discusses test-suite strategy for AI-assisted coding with mitsuhiko:
- He agrees you can have an agent build a test suite before starting a code port, and giving hints about the kind of testing you want—since you know the fragile spots—makes the agent perform much better, putting the port on better rails.
- Still, he prefers not to ask for a monumental suite upfront: agents will try hard to verify everything anyway and may build a massive test suite regardless. Starting from extending the existing tests feels like a more direct way to work.
