MCP server got 2M weekly calls from ChatGPT's own recommendations, then lost 95% of signups overnight

The author of GSC Wizard (a Search Console analytics MCP server) shared first-party data on being recommended by ChatGPT — and the crash when it stopped:

Directory mechanics: rank tracked usage, not listing copy (#168/3,316 → #33/10,647 overall); text changes take 3-4 weeks per review; category is a lever — moving to data & analytics (621) made him #1 there but didn't move overall rank. Directory sizes on 1 Nov: ChatGPT 10,647, Claude connectors 8,471 (+89/day), Cursor 491.

Takeaways for server authors: write tool descriptions as user questions (intent matching); return computed answers, never raw rows; log every call with client/tool name; expect proactive-suggestion channels to vanish without notice; pick the smallest honest category.
