Reddit pays into a $60M/year Google data deal — and should stop feeding the crawler

Eli Schwartz argued in an August newsletter that Reddit should stop letting Google crawl it, and events seem to be proving him right.
- Reddit's data licensing deal with Google is reportedly worth $60M a year, but for an ad-driven business, visibility that doesn't convert into clicks and ad impressions is worthless.
- Reports of Reddit declining in ChatGPT visibility don't matter much: ChatGPT's market share is far smaller than Google's, and Google is the company building the machine that replaces the click.
- Sites spamming Reddit for LLM visibility further show the economics of these deals are broken.
His advice: Reddit should walk away from these visibility partnerships.
