Karpathy reveals his coding setup: Claude Code desktop app, Opus 5.5 at medium effort

Andrej Karpathy shared his current coding workflow in a HackerTube blog post, relayed by @YuchenjUW.
- He uses the Claude Code desktop app for Mac with Opus 5.5 at Medium reasoning effort as his default, arguing there's no point running the smartest model at maximum effort for most tasks.
- He says he no longer does anything resembling traditional engineering — no reading/writing code or terminal commands — he only talks to Claude and has it do everything.
- His only manual steps on a recent project: creating a Google Cloud API key to query YouTube metadata, booting a VPS, and buying a domain. Once the box was up, he gave Claude the IP and it handled updating, deploying, securing, hardening, and optimizing the code.
- The relayer uses this to restate his take: the terminal is the wrong interface for coding agents; desktop apps are the best interface today.
