Stanford's GUIDE generates personalized mental health interventions at runtime, RCT shows reduced stress

A Stanford team (Bhattacharjee, Yang, Brunskill et al.) presents at UIST 2026 a paper introducing "generative experiences" for digital mental health: instead of pre-authored interaction flows, the GUIDE system composes personalized content and multimodal interaction structure at runtime from rubric-guided modular components (audio, video, timers, reflective prompts, breathing exercises). In a preregistered RCT (N=237), GUIDE significantly reduced stress (p=.02) and improved user experience (p=.04) versus an LLM-based cognitive restructuring control, while revealing tensions around personalization across the interaction sequence.
