UChicago study: students demand thousands to give up smartphones as screens kill street play
aakashgupta · x · 2026-10-31
Aakash Gupta argues that screens ended self-organized street play through a network effect: every kid who stayed inside made the street slightly more boring for those still out, cascading until the block was empty — no single kid voted for it. He cites a University of Chicago team led by Leonardo Bursztyn that asked 1,000+ college students how much cash they'd need to give up their phones, quantifying the tradeoff.
