A new working paper, "The Feasibility of a Hardwired Pause of Frontier AI Training," with 25 interdisciplinary coauthors, proposes banning production of training-capable chips while allowing inference-only chips — a targeted intervention that wouldn't bankrupt anyone. Context: 63% of voters in a recent WSJ poll want an AI development pause. David Duvenaud says the paper substantially updated his view on whether an AI slowdown is feasible.
