Data scientist pushes back on Anthropic's economic doomerism: hype, not tech, is the problem
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-31
Responding to the viral thread on Anthropic's AI economic simulation, data-viz expert Gerard Sans argues Silicon Valley's fantasies are winding down: AI is a useful tool only when experts steer it to fix costly errors, problems are well-defined, and context is complete.
In a follow-up he adds that the promise evaporates the moment something fails—novice users trust blindly, ill-defined problems get mediocre solutions, missing context leaves problems unsolved—frustrating users and companies alike. "The problem was never the technology but the hype. Exaggerated expectations get paid for dearly."
