AWS has open-sourced Strands Harness, a general-purpose agent framework it claims delivers accuracy broadly comparable to Claude Code and Codex at 45% lower cost, with no vendor lock-in and no forced Bedrock dependency.
Key capabilities:
- File, shell and web tools out of the box
- Built-in context management, memory, persistent sessions and prompt caching
- Handoffs to other agents
- One-line model swapping: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or local models via Ollama
- MCP server support with bring-your-own tools and skills
- Prototype in the Strands CLI, then /export the agent as Python or TypeScript code
AWS says savings come mainly from context management. Built by the team behind AgentCore Harness, it runs on a laptop or any cloud.
