Chart principle: put the source, date and byline inside the image itself
panickssery · x · 2026-10-31
Principle 3 of panickssery's chart thread: anything a reader needs to trust the chart must survive inside the frame. Once a chart is screenshotted and reposted, a sourceless version loses all context; the good version carries a headline-as-finding ('Fewer than 1 in 5 readers reach the end of an article'), a source line with sample size and date (41,200 views, Sep 2026), and a byline. The byline is also how a chart that spreads sends people back to you—a newsroom convention FT and The Economist follow, and Datawrapper adds by default.
