Lacuna's Standing On traces any repo's research roots — nanoGPT stands on 140 papers
hugo_larochelle · x · 2026-10-31
Lacuna Research launched Standing On, a tool that maps code to the research behind it. Paste a GitHub repo and it reads imports, function calls, loaded Hugging Face models, and arXiv links in comments/READMEs, matching each piece to papers with one-line key ideas.
- Example: nanoGPT has just 15 Python files building on 13 papers, but the citation tree expands to 140 papers going back to Rosenblatt's 1958 perceptron.
- Two AI models (Claude and Codex) pick papers and links, checked against Lacuna; solid lines = both agree, dashed = one model's pick.
- Supports digging back through idea lineage and exporting as BibTeX, CSV, or Markdown.
