PufferLib's style guide goes viral: 'equally useful for human and AI programmers'
yacineMTB · x · 2026-10-31
Yacine shared PufferLib's hand-written code style and refactoring guide, calling it the best style guide he's read since STB-style headers. The guide opens with a joke: unless your name is John Carmack, read it before blindly shoveling code into whatever language model is currently replacing you.
It lays out a five-step refactoring algorithm: inline single-use functions, eliminate defensive checks in favor of plain asserts, merge/invert conditionals to reduce nesting, co-optimize multi-consumer functions with their callers, and apply style as a final pass — all aimed at shrinking source without golfing, while preserving behavior and performance determinism.
