Scaling laws quantify how much compute synthetic data rewrites are worth
chrmanning · x · 2026-10-31
Ahmed's thread (shared by Percy Liang) fits scaling laws to answer two questions about the now-standard practice of synthetic rewrites for LM pretraining: how much compute should you spend rewriting data, and can a model trained on rewrites beat the rewriting model? The work quantifies gains in compute and data efficiency.
