GitHub's 2026 Octoverse report confirms agents have become part of everyday developer workflows:
- Developers pushed code to GitHub 17.9 billion times in the past 12 months — more than 2024 and 2025 combined, with commits and pushes hitting all-time highs.
- More than 40% of pull requests are now started by an agent (as of September).
- New repos with an agent configuration file average 8x more commits than those without.
- Platform activity bent sharply upward mid-year, which GitHub ties to developers moving from trying agents out to working alongside them.
- The report highlights projects across fields: Nepal's Gati disaster-alert relay on GitHub Pages/Actions, NASA JPL's spacecraft onboard software, open-source e-reader firmware, and first-time coverage of healthcare and agriculture.
