Intel down 23% post-earnings: AI server demand booms while PC business collapses

Intel fell 23% after earnings, but the headline hides an important signal about the AI boom:

Diverging businesses

AI boom cannibalizing other demand: AI infrastructure demand drives memory shortages, DRAM prices rise, PCs get pricier, OEMs cut orders. Intel expects PC shipments to fall 12% in 2026 and 10% in 2027.

Underrated bottleneck: advanced substrates. Granite Rapids demand is strong but constrained by Intel 3 capacity and packaging substrates. Substrate suppliers posted huge September YoY growth (Unimicron +64.7%, Kinsus +44.5%, Nan Ya PCB +57.8%); Ibiden approved ¥151B for high-performance CPU substrates, with new capacity not until FY2029.

Why not buy the dip: Q3 non-GAAP gross margin 44%, Q4 guided to 38%—$1.4B less quarterly gross profit; elevated manufacturing spending and negative FCF expected in 2027 after raising $23B in equity in August; of $6.7B foundry revenue only $411M is external, with the segment losing $1.9B.

Conclusion: being on the right side of AI demand doesn't mean shareholders capture the economics—substrate suppliers look more interesting; AMD's Nov 3 results will test whether constraints are industry-wide or Intel-specific.
