Binance hack's $6.3B loss traced to one compromised DevOps engineer's laptop
Miles_Brundage · x · 2026-10-30
Binance's initial investigation into its security incident estimates total impact at around $6.3B. The breach appears to have started with a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which let the attacker access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions; no evidence of wallet private key leaks was found.
Binance has worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets — roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain so far — and says the SAFU fund and company funds will cover all losses, with user funds safe. A detailed technical post-mortem is promised.
