Team moved 60 agents off one shared API key: 4 lessons from the migration
No_Reindeer3079 · reddit · 2026-10-30
A Reddit user details migrating 60 agents from a single shared master API key to per-agent keys:
- Inventorying was the slow part: 60 allow-lists of exact routes, 6 of the first 25 turned out identical and were merged.
- Least privilege: most agents only needed reads; no wildcards, anything outside the list gets a 403.
- Short-lived runs: each call uses a 60-second, single-call token so runaway loops can't keep hitting the API.
- Kill the master key last: only after scanning every script and scheduled job, and confirming each new key carried real traffic.
The author asks whether others prefer per-agent keys, a proxy, or trusting prompts.
