US spends $190B a year on R&D but results stay trapped in PDFs; Project Protostar wants to fix that
evijit · x · 2026-10-30
Hugging Face researcher @evijit explained in an interview that the United States invests about $190 billion in R&D annually, yet taxpayer-funded research is mostly published as tables inside PDFs or locked in small silos like OpenFDA—formats AI can't readily use.
Project Protostar, a Hugging Face initiative with ORCA and Open Forum for AI, encourages publicly funded organizations to convert their work into AI-ready formats, publish it as Hugging Face datasets, and release their models and research openly. She also noted reproducibility is her passion and could have talked about it for hours.
