Nature Medicine review: about half of people with obesity are metabolically healthy
EricTopol · x · 2026-10-30
Eric Topol shares a new Nature Medicine review on the metabolic heterogeneity of obesity, noting that about half of people with obesity are considered metabolically healthy (MHO), with normal insulin sensitivity, glucose, lipids and intrahepatic triglycerides. The review details cellular, organ-system and systemic differences between MHO and MUO groups, heterogeneity in weight-loss responses, and proposes concrete MHO criteria: no CVD/T2D/CKD/hypertension, fasting glucose ≤89 mg/dl, HbA1c ≤5.4%, TG <95 mg/dl, TG/HDL-C <2.0, and IHTG <5%.
