Neuralink lets ALS patient Kenneth call his mom independently for the first time
XFreeze · x · 2026-10-30
Neuralink shared a moving milestone: Kenneth, an ALS patient who previously needed his wife Cheryl to interpret every phone call, has now completed a call entirely on his own.
The team built a system that:
- Decodes his intended speech directly from brain signals into words
- Sends his synthesized voice into the call via the Speech app
- Echo-cancels so he hears his own words without feedback
His mom then called, and Kenneth finished the conversation himself: "I am going to hang up and make dinner now. We are going to have Korean." "Love you, son." The post frames Neuralink as restoring not just communication but independence and everyday moments with loved ones.
