Study of 26,811 Chinese students: AI lifted homework scores 18% but cut exam scores 20%

Warwick behavioral economist Valerio Capraro highlights a new working paper tracking 26,811 students in China: AI use produced a stark divergence — homework scores rose 18% while closed-book exam scores fell 20%.
The driver appears to be AI replacing the learning process: among students who never used AI, higher homework scores track with higher exam scores; among AI users the relationship flips — exceptionally high homework scores are associated with substantially worse exam performance. The paper is linked in the replies.
