Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to ~60,000 Employees to Fund Its AI Future
tomwarren · x · 2026-10-30
Per The Verge, Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to roughly 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada and India — the first such offer at this scale, expanding on a retirement offer for 9,000 earlier this year. The goal: cut operating costs and headcount without reducing AI infrastructure investment. It echoes Satya Nadella's comment from two years ago: total people costs will fall, cost per head will rise, and GPU-per-researcher will go up — fewer employees, but better paid and equipped with more AI tooling.
