GitHub drops Copilot seat requirement: Enterprise now pays per AI credit as agent bills scale
shashib · x · 2026-10-29
At GitHub Universe, GitHub announced Enterprise customers can drop the separate Copilot subscription and pay only for AI credits consumed, while getting the full lineup: the new Copilot app, code review, and automations.
Key numbers:
- 1 GitHub AI credit = $0.01
- Each Copilot Enterprise seat includes $39 in monthly credits ($70 promo June–August)
- GitHub added 4M CPU cores in 2026
This completes a pricing shift begun in April, when a credit meter went inside every Copilot seat; now the meter stays while the seat goes. The cost driver moves from headcount to agent activity — the author's advice: ask your account team for usage reporting first. Available via GitHub sales now, self-serve to follow; existing Copilot Business/Enterprise customers can keep current plans or switch.
