PsiQuantum unveils low-loss 8×8 optical circuit switch chip for AI datacenters

PsiQuantum unveiled an 8×8 Optical Circuit Switch demo built on the low-loss silicon photonics platform it has developed for nearly a decade for quantum computing, saying industry partners doubted the numbers were achievable.
- All-optical switching with no pluggable transceivers, moving mirrors, or loss-compensating amplifiers; no moving parts in a far smaller package.
- 64-port strictly non-blocking silicon tests this year; 72-port tapes out soon.
- All chips run well under 3dB loss thanks to sub-1mdB splitters/crossings, 1dB/m waveguides, and 5x-better edge coupling — no per-fiber amplifiers needed.
The author credits Google as the only company deploying free-space OCS at meaningful scale, and frames AI's infrastructure squeeze as the market opportunity.
