Google's EmbeddingGemma 2: one open embedding space for text, image, audio, video, setting a new Pareto frontier
kalyan_kpl · x · 2026-10-28
Google's paper introduces EmbeddingGemma 2, an open multimodal embedding model natively representing text, images, audio, video, and combinations thereof in a unified space.
Method
- Simplified per-layer embeddings
- A multi-stage curriculum with modality and objective progression, ensuring strong quality on unimodal, cross-modal, and mixed-modal evaluations
Results
- Establishes a new Pareto frontier, outperforming specialist models and models 2–12× larger
- Built for resource-constrained settings: selective modality encoder loading, adjustable vision token budgets, truncatable embedding dimensions, and quantized weights
