Jeff Clune traces Genie's arc: from a 'crazy' 2019 idea to Hollywood-ready world model
databoydg · x · 2026-10-28
Jeff Clune reflects on his team's research becoming Google's flagship Genie product: his 2019 AI-GA idea (a NN generating the entire environment, pixels and sound included) barely worked in Genie 1 (2024), worked decently in Genie 2 eight months later, became impressive in Genie 3 nine months after that, and Genie 4 now seems ready for Hollywood and VR. Led by Ashishrewards, Jake Parkerholder and rockt, the small-team effort shows a striking arc—and he teases open-ended learning as the next frontier.
